So You Think You Can Dance Season 5. Top 20 Perform!
Woah! What a great show last night. That was probably the best starting night of SYTYCD so far! This is going to be a killer season!

14 Dances last night! Wow. Too bad most of them were largely forgettable. Even running through the episode to make screen shots, I had forgotten half of these dances since last night. Even some of the memorable ones weren’t bouncing around in my head for particularly good reasons.
The guest judges last night were Tabitha and Napoleon, the hip-hop choreographers. You would think that with a double-judge in one seat, their criticism after each performance would drag on, but it turns out nobody can out-talk Nigel or Mary.

The first dance of the night was a Tony Meredith Jive, executed well, but without any fire or anything special at all. Again, it looks like Will is just running circles around Jessica, and the Judges finally admit it

Their second number was a Mandy Moore lyrical routine to a Heart song. This was the dance with the shirt prop. I’m still torn on the use of props, but Mandy Moore designed this routine well, where the shirt is interesting and useful but doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the dance. I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first dance.

There aren’t enough couples left to keep them out of the bottom three tomorrow. (I hope). I like Will but I think he could really shine with a better partner.
My current obsession is Lego Indiana Jones, the newest game in the Lego line of Console games from Traveller’s Tales and LucasArts.

QUICK RATINGS:
This opening routine? Could it be choreographed by the amazing Wade Robson? This is like, Tim Burton meets American McGee’s Alice! In other words - rad-iculous!

Wait a minute.. This is sort of boring… Ahh okay, it’s Mia Michaels. Read the rest of this entry »
Last night’s episode of SYTYCD was fantastic! Even re-watching the entire show to grab screen shots, there were few dissapointing bits. The biggest surprise of the night was the killer “lyrical hip-hop” routine (the phrase coined by guest host, Big Gay Alan) performed by Chelsie and Mark. I made no bones about disliking Mark from the beginning, but I guess he finally exhibited some dancing chops. I still think he’s creepy. Ech.
So - On with the recap:

Kherington & Twitch = JAILBREAK

This was an absolutely fun routine with both partners putting their hearts and souls into it. They worked the audience. They worked the judges. The technical difficulty wasn’t terribly high, but they made it look smashing.
I made some perty pictures to share. All the “styles” are self-identified by the contestant on Fox’s website, so don’t make fun of me because some of them are cringeworthy. I even edited Joshua’s because I like him a lot and I felt like a tard captioning him with just “Performer”. I am REALLY bored at work today and I have trouble remembering some of these guys without their name plastered all over their torso.
Here are my reviews of last night’s performances:

Fruity King Costume Jazz Ball What?

I was mad at Nigel for talking so much about their costumes, when the contestants can’t do anything about the wardrobe. They did look ridiculous though, and their performance was pretty forgettable. A lot of contestants aren’t hitting 110% effort on stage yet. Mandy Moore’s routine has some potential, but she didn’t bring any spirit out of these two at all. Read the rest of this entry »
