Last night’s episode of SYTYCD was fantastic! Even re-watching the entire show to grab screen shots, there were few dissapointing bits. The biggest surprise of the night was the killer “lyrical hip-hop” routine (the phrase coined by guest host, Big Gay Alan) performed by Chelsie and Mark. I made no bones about disliking Mark from the beginning, but I guess he finally exhibited some dancing chops. I still think he’s creepy. Ech.

So - On with the recap:

Kherington & Twitch = JAILBREAK

This was an absolutely fun routine with both partners putting their hearts and souls into it. They worked the audience. They worked the judges. The technical difficulty wasn’t terribly high, but they made it look smashing.

Barring her name, Kherrington is still adorable and charming. Not much needs to be said about Twitch, other than I worry that he is the defacto winner of this season already. We’ll have to wait and see whether the audience actually cares about the last few dances, or if they just vote for popularity and personality. Joshua is probably running a close second in the popularity contest though.

Courtney & Gev - TEENY TINY RUMBA

I was really afraid for these guys when the routine began with that slightly awkward-looking slide-down-the-body-maneuver, but they danced incredibly well. They are so cute and tiny and sexy! I mean, who didn’t predict that Nigel would have something to say about Courtney’s half and half dress?

You know I have to post this… Grab that butt, Gevorg!

Comfort & Chris = SORT OF MILDLY THREATENING ANIMALS

Trainwreck! I continue to feel bad for poor Chris, who by all current evidence, is a sweet and loveable guy. He just can’t freaking dance with any power or conviction. Particularly last night, he was dancing by numbers and not getting into the feeling of the dance at all. Comfort needs a new partner like I need to eat a salad today for lunch but a cheeseburger sounds so good, but OH GOD I really should be getting a salad.

Plus his eyes are still too close together and it freaks me out. Sorry Chris, you are my prediction for going home tomorrow.

Jessica & Will = DISCO DISASTER

Okay, maybe disaster is too strong a word. Will did fantastic in this routine. He channeled Travolta in more moments than just the above finger-pointing-picture. Jessica seems nice but she is most certainly dragging down William by association. I hope they don’t end up in the bottom three tonight, but if they do, I’d not be sad to lose Jessica.

Will did double backflips across the stage right before Jessica flung herself down onto his knee for the big finish. It’s hard to tell who’s fault this was, but it was pretty funny to watch:

Kourtni & Matt = QUIRKY COMICBOOK CHARACTERS

Loved this dance to death. It was quirky, funny, well performed and it was nice to see a new guest choreographer. On the other hand, I hate to parrot the judges, and to beat this horse to death, but what the hell is wrong with the wardrobe department at SYTYCD? Are they taking bets in the back room and trying to fix this game? What the crap did they make Kourtni and Matt wear, and what LCD addled homeless person put it together? They had a fantastic opportunity to make them into awesome looking Superheros, but instead we get Archie comics + festive paper bag clothes.

I loved the synchronized leaps, and the little touches, and the geniune smiles on their faces as they performed.

Chelsea & Thayne - QUICK-STEP MINEFIELD

Unfortunately, this was probably the worst dance of the night. The saddest part is that doing so poorly with the judges was not entirely their fault. They had to quickstep to: You Can’t Hurry Love, by Phil Collins. Seriously? They could have turned out a perfect performance, with every step flawless, and it wouldn’t have mattered because the dance did not fit the music at all. The song was too slow, too boring, and has no changes in tempo or power. A good piece of music here might have pushed them out of the bottom. At least they didn’t make her wear a paper sack.

Seriously.

Welp, they gave it the old college try, but I predict these guys in the bottom tonight as well. Either Thayne or Chris are going home. The girls are a bit harder to judge.

Chelsie & Mark = SUPRISE! WE CAN DO HIP-HOP!

Yes, I still think Mark is creepy, but damn this couple turned it out last night. They had great choreography with great “hits” and a strong story for the audience to follow, but they did every step masterfully. Who knew that little Chelsie could pop like that? There was a great segment in mid-piece where she pops better than most of the other girls could muster. They have amazing coordination throughout that portion as well, as Mark leads/pulls/manipulates and she jerks and moves in response.

Katee & Joshua = ONE STEAMY SAMBA

Well now we know who has the ghetto-booty on this team. What can I say really? Joshua and Katee are fantastic. The execution of this dance was fairly good, but the personality and the fun they projected while performing it, lit up the entire stage. These guys will be top 2 or 3 couples, along with Twitchington and (my dark horse prediction->) Courtney & Gev.
